At Devine, Barrows & Devine we represent auto accident victims and their families.  We pride ourselves on our commitment to providing only the best legal representation available by our Boston auto accident attorneys.  If you are in need of legal counsel, look no further than Devine, Barrows & Devine.  As a Massachusetts driver, we feel that it is important for you to understand the steps our local government is taking to improve the safety of our roads and streets.

Many states including Michigan, New Jersey, Texas and New York have enacted Driver Responsibility Laws.  These laws were put into place in order to hold drivers responsible and to improve the safety of our roads.  Though Massachusetts has not put a traditional Driver Responsibility Law into place, state lawmakers have created a number of programs to encourage safe driving habits and help young drivers avoid accidents.

Alive at 25

This four hour course was designed to teach young drivers, between the ages of 16 and 24, how to be safe and courteous drivers.  Alive at 25 was created because studies have shown that this age group is most likely to be involved in a fatal auto accident.  The interactive course shows young drivers how to safely operate a vehicle and how to most effectively avoid an accident.

Instructors use a number of tools including lecture, group interaction, video segments, workbooks and role play to teach each session.  The course focuses on the dangers of speeding, drinking and driving, inexperience and driver distractions.

Surchargable Accidents

In order to hold drivers, of all ages, responsible in the case of an accident, Massachusetts operates on a “surchargable” at-fault system.  This means that a driver is sent a notice of surcharge if they are considered to be more than fifty percent at-fault in an accident.  In this case a driver can expect to receive point on their license and a surcharge on their insurance premium.  This program was designed to discourage unsafe driving and hold drivers financially responsible for their actions.  This is yet another step taken by state lawmakers to keep our roads and highways safe.
